A complete sequence of rice chromosome

A complete sequence of rice chromosome 1

The entire sequence of rice (Oryza sativa japonica L. cv. Nipponbare) chromosome 1 has been completed recently. This is part of the genome sequencing effort of the Rice Genome Research Program (RGP), which started in 1998. A region from 151.4-160.0 cM of the genetic map has been also independently analyzed by the National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NIAST) in Korea. The entire chromosome is estimated to be 45.7 Mbp in length and code for 6,756 genes. As the first rice chromosome to be completely and accurately sequenced, this is an important milestone for the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP), which aims to sequence the entire rice genome.

This site provides links to all pertinent data associated with the genome sequence of rice chromosome 1 including the latest progress in sequencing. The sequence data and analysis described in the accompanying paper, which appeared in Nature was based on the data obtained as of April 2002.

The rice genome sequence will serve as the "gold standard" for isolating agronomically important genes and may provide the key for understanding the evolutionary relationships among cereal genomes.
